Britain’s construction downturn eased noticeably in July 2026, according to S&P Global’s latest industry survey. The Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 44.7 from 38.4 in June. Although a reading below 50 still indicates contraction, the improvement was considerably stronger than economists had expected.
Conditions improved across important parts of the sector. Commercial construction recorded its strongest reading in four months, while housebuilding declined at its slowest rate since October 2025. New orders also reached their strongest level since September 2025, suggesting that the deterioration in demand was becoming less severe.
For Equity Compass, the data is relevant because the backdrop for development can change well before headline construction activity returns to growth. Easing cost pressures, improving confidence and stabilising order books can all influence the environment in which individual development opportunities are assessed. Project-specific fundamentals, security, planning position, capital structure and exit assumptions remain more important than a single sector indicator.
